Karnataka Govt Increases SSLC Exam Fees by 5% for 2025–26, Faces Backlash
Parents and education activists say the fee hike adds pressure on students from low-income families.

Bengaluru, Oct 7: The Karnataka government is facing criticism after announcing a 5% increase in SSLC (Class 10) examination fees for the academic year 2025–26, at a time when concerns over rising education costs continue to mount across the state.
The Karnataka School Examination and Assessment Board (KSEAB) recently issued a directive outlining the revised fee structure for students appearing in the 2025–26 SSLC exams. The hike applies uniformly to all categories- regular, repeater, and private candidates.
Revised Fee Structure:
- One subject: ₹448 (up from ₹427)
- Two subjects: ₹559 (up from ₹532)
- Three or more subjects: ₹752 (up from ₹716)
The board cited increased administrative and operational expenses as the reason behind the hike, noting that the change reflects a standard 5% rise based on existing rates.
However, the decision has sparked concern among parents, teachers, and education rights groups. Many argue that even a modest hike disproportionately impacts students from economically weaker sections, especially when combined with other rising education-related costs like textbooks, uniforms, and transport.
“There’s been no word yet on exemptions or concessions for students who can’t afford these fees,” said a representative from a local education NGO. “This is another example of how public education is becoming less accessible for the poor.”
With no official clarification on whether fee waivers will be provided for underprivileged students, critics are urging the government to reconsider the hike or introduce immediate support measures.
