Karnataka Govt Backs Proposal for Fisheries University, Says CM Siddaramaiah
Speaking at World Fisheries Day, the Chief Minister highlights the sector’s importance and new support measures for fishermen.

Bengaluru: Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Saturday announced that the state government is ready to support the establishment of a dedicated Fisheries University. He was speaking at the inauguration of World Fisheries Day and Matsya Mela 2025, organised by the Fisheries Department in Bengaluru.
Highlighting the sector’s significance, Siddaramaiah noted that Karnataka has a 320-km-long coastline and around 5.5 lakh hectares of inland water resources. The state ranks third in India in fish production and fourth in fish exports, he said, adding that nearly 10 lakh people in Karnataka depend on fishing for their livelihood.
The Chief Minister said the government has increased the annual diesel supply limit for mechanised boats from 1.5 lakh litres to 2 lakh litres since coming to power. He added that kerosene for traditional boats is being provided at a subsidised rate of ₹35 per litre.
Siddaramaiah also praised Fisheries Minister Mankal Vaidya for his efforts in improving the sector and supporting the welfare of fishing communities.
