Karnataka Bans Tobacco Advertisements on State Buses and Bus Stands
The decision follows public criticism, with the transport minister ordering immediate removal of all tobacco-related ads.

The Karnataka government has imposed a complete ban on all direct and indirect advertisements promoting tobacco consumption on state-run buses and at bus stands. The move comes in response to growing public criticism over the display of such advertisements in public transport spaces.
Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy issued the directive on Friday, instructing officials to enforce the ban with immediate effect across all four state transport corporations. These include the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC), Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC), North Western Karnataka Road Transport Corporation (NWKRTC), and Kalyana Karnataka Road Transport Corporation (KKRTC).
In an official note addressed to the managing directors of the corporations, the minister clearly stated that no advertisements encouraging the use of tobacco products—either directly or indirectly—should be displayed on buses or within bus stand premises.
He further directed officials to identify any existing tobacco-related advertisements and set a clear timeline for their removal. The step is aimed at safeguarding public interest and discouraging tobacco use, especially in spaces frequented by commuters of all age groups.
The decision reinforces the state’s broader efforts to promote public health and limit the visibility of tobacco products in everyday public environments.
