President Droupadi Murmu administers oath; Justice Kant begins a tenure of over 14 months.

Justice Surya Kant on Monday took oath as the 53rd Chief Justice of India (CJI). The oath of office was administered by President Droupadi Murmu at a ceremony attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, judges of the Supreme Court, and several Chief Justices and judges from countries including Bhutan, Kenya, Malaysia, Brazil, Mauritius, Nepal and Sri Lanka.

Justice Surya Kant was elevated to the Supreme Court on May 24, 2019. His tenure at the apex court continues until February 9, 2027, giving him a relatively long term of more than 14 months as the Chief Justice of India.
