Jummah Sermon in Bhatkal Calls for Return to Islamic Simplicity in Marriage
Moulana Khawaja Moinuddin Madani criticizes extravagant weddings and non-Islamic rituals, urging focus on rights, responsibilities, and simplicity.

In a powerful Jummah sermon at Khalfa Masjid Bhatkal, Moulana Khawaja Moinuddin Akrami Madani addressed the community on the Islamic principles of marriage, strongly advocating for a return to simplicity and religious adherence over social pressure and extravagance.
The scholar emphasized that the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) specifically stressed the importance of Taqwa (God-consciousness) during marriage sermons, indicating that a successful marital life is built on the fear of Allah, not on lavish displays.
“Islam made marriage the easiest act, but its followers, through their conduct, have made it the most difficult,” Khawaja Moulana stated. He criticized the current trend where families incur debt, even interest-based loans, to fund extravagant ceremonies and unnecessary rituals just to avoid social judgment.
He outlined the Islamic prescription for marriage:
- A simple Nikah ceremony, preferably in a mosque.
- A Mehr (dower) given by the groom according to his means.
- A Walima (marriage feast) hosted by the groom within his capacity.
Moulana Madani strictly warned against rituals and customs that have no basis in Islam, stating they bring no reward and may instead incur sin. He urged parents to financially and spiritually prepare their children for marriage, teaching daughters the Islamic rights and responsibilities of a wife and the importance of adapting to a new household with patience and wisdom.
The sermon concluded with a call to prioritize Islamic teachings over societal expectations to ensure marriages are blessed, enduring, and a source of peace rather than debt and discord.
