BHATKAL – In a powerful Jummah sermon at Jamia Masjid Bhatkal, Moulana Abdul Aleem Khateeb Nadvi delivered a profound message on the central role of neighborly rights in building a strong, unified, and peaceful society.

The scholar explained that Islam places immense importance on the concept of “neighbor,” which extends beyond those living next door to include classmates, colleagues, and even temporary travel companions. He stressed that good conduct towards neighbors is a fundamental demand of faith itself, quoting a Hadith where the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) stated, “He is not a believer whose neighbors are not safe from his harm.”

Moulana Abdul Aleem outlined a comprehensive view of a neighbor’s rights, which includes:

  • Physical Care: Checking on their well-being, visiting them when sick, and sharing food, especially during times of celebration or need.
  • Emotional Consideration: Being mindful of their feelings and circumstances, such as ensuring one’s own celebrations or children’s new clothes do not become a source of pain for a less fortunate neighbor.
  • Spiritual Concern: Gently encouraging and guiding neighbors in matters of faith with love and wisdom.
  • Patience and Tolerance: Bearing with patience any inconvenience caused by a neighbor, seeking to resolve issues amicably rather than through immediate conflict.

A significant point of the sermon was the emphasis that these rights are universal. They apply to Muslim and non-Muslim neighbors alike, to the good-natured and the ill-tempered. The scholar cited the example of companions like Abdullah ibn Umar (RA), who would ensure their Jewish neighbors received a share of meals prepared in their homes.

The sermon concluded by connecting strong neighborly bonds to the broader health of the community and the nation. The scholar argued that unity within a neighborhood is the essential building block for unity within a city, a country, and the entire Muslim community (Ummah). Fulfilling these rights, he stated, is not just a social responsibility but a means to attract divine mercy and assistance.
