The Bhatkal unit of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind has announced the launch of a 10-day national awareness drive titled “Rights of Neighbours,” scheduled to run from 21 to 30 November 2025. The campaign is part of the organisation’s ongoing efforts to strengthen social harmony and educate people about Islamic teachings related to neighbourly responsibilities.

The announcement was made during a press conference at the Dawat Centre in Bhatkal. Ameer-e-Maqami Maulana Syed Zubair S.M. addressed the media in Urdu, while Raza Manvi briefed reporters in Kannada. Community member Abdul Rauf Sonur was also present.

Islamic Teachings on Neighbourhood Duties

Maulana Syed Zubair said the campaign’s central aim is to spread awareness about mutual respect, cooperation and the moral obligations one has toward neighbours. He noted that the concept of a “neighbour” extends far beyond the houses next door.

According to him, neighbours include work colleagues, people met during travel, shopkeepers, classmates, office partners and others who share everyday spaces. Islam, he added, places neighbours almost on par with family, making it a religious and social duty to treat them with care, kindness and protection.

He reminded that the Qur’an and Hadith strongly emphasise good conduct, compassion and avoiding harm toward those around us. “A true Muslim is one who brings peace and comfort to their neighbours,” he said.

Declining Neighbourly Interaction

Highlighting the growing distance between communities, Maulana Zubair said that modern lifestyles, busy routines and social disconnect have weakened relationships between neighbours. He pointed out that small disputes, traffic-related annoyances and misunderstandings often stem from this lack of interaction, making such awareness campaigns especially important.

Goals of the 10-Day Campaign

The national campaign aims to:

  • Increase understanding of neighbourly rights and duties
  • Encourage peaceful resolution of complaints and conflicts
  • Promote traffic discipline and public-space etiquette
  • Share Islam’s values of peace and coexistence with non-Muslim communities
  • Strengthen friendships, kindness and cooperation within local neighbourhoods

Activities Across Bhatkal and Beyond

As part of the initiative, various programmes will be organised at local and state levels. These include:

  • Door-to-door visits to spread awareness
  • Neighbourhood meetings and community interactions
  • Special messages delivered through mosques
  • Friday sermons focused on neighbourly conduct
  • Dedicated events for women and youth
  • Drawing and essay competitions in schools

Call for Public Participation

Concluding the briefing, Maulana Syed Zubair encouraged residents to actively take part in the campaign and work toward becoming responsible and caring neighbours. He said such initiatives play a vital role in building peaceful, united and compassionate communities.
