Italy Prepares Vessels to Join International Flotilla Challenging Gaza Blockade
Preparations are ongoing in Italy for vessels set to join the Global Sumud Flotilla, a broad international effort aimed at breaking the Israeli blockade of Gaza. The flotilla first set sail from Spain on August 31, now heading toward Tunisia where the Italian boats will meet up with Spanish and Greek vessels.
Maria Elena Delia, a spokeswoman representing the flotilla in Italy, confirmed that the Italian boats’ departure was delayed not due to technical issues but to align with fleets from other countries. “The Spanish boats are heading to Tunisia, with some already arriving. They will join our vessels and those coming from Greece,” she told Anadolu in Sicily.
This multinational convoy represents one of the largest civilian efforts to challenge the blockade, uniting over 50 vessels carrying activists, humanitarian workers, and aid supplies from more than 40 countries. The mission seeks to bring humanitarian aid to the besieged Gaza Strip and draw international attention to the ongoing crisis.
Italian political groups and individuals have expressed support for the flotilla’s goal, emphasizing global solidarity and the urgency of humanitarian access. Despite threats from Israeli authorities, the flotilla remains committed to a peaceful voyage aimed at ending the siege and alleviating suffering in Gaza.
