Israeli Commandos Poised to Intercept Global Sumud Flotilla Near Gaza

Israeli military plans to intercept the Global Sumud Flotilla as it approaches Gaza have come to light, with Channel 12 reporting that elite Shayetet 13 naval commandos will be instructed to board vessels, order activists to move to Israeli ships, arrest those who resist, and confiscate or sink empty boats. The Sumud Flotilla is a civilian-led initiative consisting of nearly 50 vessels from 44 countries, with hundreds of activists aiming to break Israel’s blockade of Gaza and deliver humanitarian aid.

The flotilla’s progress has been met by escalating threats and attacks, including drone strikes, communication jamming, and alleged explosions—danger increasing as the boats near Gaza. Multiple explosions were reported earlier this week, and activists, including parliamentarians from several countries, have documented frightening drone incidents and disruptions.

Israel’s far-right National Security Minister, Itamar Ben-Gvir, has branded all flotilla activists as “terrorists,” calling for them to be tried in Israeli courts. The Israeli Foreign Ministry insists no vessel will be allowed to reach Gaza’s coast, suggesting aid should be delivered to Ashkelon instead.

International support for the flotilla is growing, with Spain and Italy dispatching naval frigates to protect vessels and assist national citizens involved in the mission. Major organizations and rights groups have called for protection of the civilians aboard and accused Israel of violating humanitarian law by obstructing the aid convoy.

The Sumud Flotilla’s attempt to reach Gaza comes amid ongoing crisis and famine in the besieged territory. The convoy’s organizers say their mission is “humanitarian, lawful, and unstoppable,” and have called on the global community to ensure the safety of all participants as tensions escalate.
