Israel Warns Recognition of Palestinian State Could Trigger Unilateral Action
Israel’s Foreign Minister Gideon Saar has strongly criticized the recent international push, including by countries like France and Britain, to recognize Palestinian statehood during the upcoming UN General Assembly. He described the move as a “mistake” that could destabilize the region and derail peace efforts.
Speaking at a joint press conference with Denmark’s Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen, Saar warned that recognition of a Palestinian state would push Israel into taking unspecified unilateral actions. He expressed concern that such recognition would complicate diplomatic avenues and make it harder to achieve lasting peace in the Middle East.
Saar’s comments come amid reports that Israel plans to annex parts of the occupied West Bank, a move widely condemned internationally as illegal under international law. The Israeli government maintains that the annexation is vital for its security.
