Gaza City, August 28, 2025: Israeli forces intensified their bombardment on Gaza City on Thursday, with at least 16 Palestinians killed and many others wounded across the enclave, according to local health officials. The heaviest strikes were reported in the eastern neighborhoods of Shejaia, Zeitoun, and Sabra, forcing families to flee toward the coast.

The latest deaths brought the toll to 71 Palestinians killed in just 24 hours, raising concerns about the worsening situation in Gaza, where nearly one million people have been sheltering.

Israeli leaders describe Gaza City as the remaining base of Hamas, the group that launched the October 2023 assault on Israel. The military said it is continuing operations across Gaza against what it calls “terrorist groups” and their facilities. It also claimed to have killed three militants in the past day, without giving further details.

Civilian Casualties in Southern Gaza

In southern Gaza, doctors at Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis said dozens of injured Palestinians were admitted with serious gunshot wounds. Many of them were in critical condition. According to the hospital’s head of nursing, those injured said they were fired upon while waiting for food near an aid distribution point in Rafah. The Israeli military did not immediately comment on the incident.

Worsening Humanitarian Crisis

The health ministry in Gaza reported that four more people, including two children, died of malnutrition on Thursday. This brings the number of people who have died of hunger-related causes since the conflict began to 317, among them 121 children.

The war broke out on October 7, 2023, after Hamas-led fighters launched a large-scale attack across the border, killing around 1,200 people in Israel and taking 251 hostages. While most hostages have since been released through negotiations, about 50 remain in captivity, with 20 confirmed alive.

More than 62,000 Palestinians have been killed in Israel’s military campaign, according to Gaza’s health ministry, which says most of those killed are women and children. Israel disputes these figures and recently asked an international hunger-monitoring group to withdraw its assessment that parts of Gaza are experiencing famine.

International Concerns

Despite renewed appeals from international actors to halt the advance into Gaza City, Israel has pressed ahead with its operations. Aid groups and humanitarian organizations have warned of rising casualties and worsening conditions for displaced civilians as bombardments continue.
