Islamic Ruling on Reciting a Surah in the Last Two Rakah of Four Rakah Prayers

According to the hadith of Abu Qatada Radhiallahu anhu, the Prophet Muhammad sallallahu alaihi wasallam recited Surah Fatiha and another surah in the first two rakah of Zuhr, but in the last two rakah he recited only Surah Fatiha. Sometimes he would recite one verse. The first rakah was longer than the second. The same was done in Asr and Fajr. Based on this, Islamic scholars explain that reciting another surah after Surah Fatiha in the first two rakah is sunnah. In the third and fourth rakah, only Surah Fatiha should be read.
