In the hadees of Hazrat Fadalah bin Ubaid (RA), a man made dua without first praising Allah or reciting durood. The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) told him that he rushed in his dua and taught that when a person finishes prayer and sits for supplication, he should first praise Allah, then send durood upon the Prophet, and then ask for his needs. Another man followed this method, and the Prophet (ﷺ) told him to supplicate and that his dua would be answered. Based on this hadees, Islamic scholars say that praising Allah and sending durood before making dua is mustahab. Imam Nawawi also wrote that scholars agreed it is recommended to begin and end dua with praise of Allah and durood. This fatwa clearly shows the Islamic ruling that this practice is recommended, not required.
