Iraq Calls for Islamic Military Alliance to Counter Israeli Aggression

Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani has called for the creation of an Islamic military alliance to confront and deter Israeli policies perceived as aggressive threats to the region. His remarks came amid rising tensions following Israel’s recent airstrike on Doha, Qatar, which killed five Hamas members and a Qatari security officer.

Describing the strike as a “shocking breach of international law,” al-Sudani emphasized that Israel’s military actions threaten security across the entire Middle East. Speaking on Qatar’s Al Jazeera channel, he said, “There is no reason Muslim nations cannot form a joint security force to defend themselves,” urging Arab and Islamic countries to develop a comprehensive partnership encompassing politics, security, and economics.

The call for unity comes as preparations continue for an emergency Arab-Islamic summit in Doha scheduled for September 15-16. The summit aims to address the fallout from the Israeli attack and is expected to activate a joint Arab military force, an initiative originally proposed by Egypt nearly ten years ago.

Al-Sudani highlighted the many diplomatic and economic tools at the Islamic world’s disposal to counter Israel and warned that the aggression would not be limited to Qatar. He further pointed to what he termed the ongoing systematic killings in Gaza, which have resulted in over 64,800 Palestinian deaths since October 2023.

The attack targeted a residential compound where Hamas leaders were engaged in discussions about a US-backed proposal to end the conflict in Gaza. The developments have galvanized calls across the Islamic world for greater cooperation and coordinated defense mechanisms.
