India’s PM Modi May Meet US President Trump During UN Visit Next Month

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to visit the United States next month to attend the United Nations General Assembly meeting in New York. During this visit, he is likely to hold talks with US President Donald Trump, according to a report by the Indian Express newspaper citing sources.
The UN General Assembly officially begins on September 9, with the annual gathering of world leaders scheduled for September 23 to 29. Although the main purpose of Modi’s visit will be the UN meeting, a key goal is to discuss and resolve ongoing trade and tariff disputes between India and the US.
Recently, President Trump imposed an additional 25 percent tariff on Indian goods in response to New Delhi’s continued purchase of Russian oil. This penalty raises the total tariff on Indian exports to the US to 50 percent, one of the highest tariffs imposed on any US trading partner.
Trade negotiations between the two countries have stalled after five rounds, mainly due to disagreements over opening up India’s large farm and dairy markets and India’s purchase of Russian oil. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent noted that several trade deals, including those with India and Switzerland, are still pending. He expressed hope that the Trump administration could finalize these agreements by the end of October, despite some challenges from the Indian side.
The talks between Modi and Trump are seen as an opportunity to mend ties and potentially restore cooperation on trade matters, easing the tensions created by the recent tariff hikes.
