India’s Defence Minister, Rajnath Singh, has emphasized that the country’s defence sector should not be reliant on external supplies or subject to foreign interference. Instead, he advocates for building a strong, self-sufficient defence architecture based on India’s own capabilities.

Speaking at the NDTV Defence Summit on Saturday, Singh outlined the government’s plan to provide comprehensive aerial security for critical installations across India. This will be achieved through the Sudarshan Chakra air defence system, which is expected to be fully operational within the next decade.

Singh explained that the new air defence shield will incorporate both defensive and offensive capabilities to counter any potential threats from adversaries. He highlighted the significance of air defence in modern warfare, citing India’s experience during Operation Sindoor as evidence of its growing importance.

In a recent Independence Day speech, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the ambitious Sudarshan Chakra project, which comes in response to rising tensions and security concerns, particularly following statements from Pakistan’s military leadership hinting at future threats to India’s assets along the border.

Singh also addressed the shifting global geopolitical landscape, stating that India’s increasing reliance on external defence resources is no longer feasible. “In today’s world, self-reliance in defence is not just an option; it is a necessity for both our national security and our economic stability,” he said.

He further explained that the defence sector is not only crucial for safeguarding the nation’s borders but is now a key pillar in supporting India’s economic growth and securing its future.

However, Singh made it clear that India’s push for self-reliance in defence should not be seen as protectionism. Instead, he emphasized that this approach is about asserting national sovereignty, autonomy, and self-confidence.
