On the 33rd anniversary of the Babri Masjid demolition, Tehreek Muslim Shabban president and Telangana Muslim Joint Action Committee convenor Mohd Mustaq Malik announced plans to build a memorial mosque in Hyderabad inspired by the original 16th-century structure in Ayodhya.

Speaking at a large public gathering in the city on Saturday, Malik said he had long imagined creating such a memorial. Recalling how people in Murshidabad once carried bricks for kilometres to construct a replica of the Babri Masjid, he said the sentiment had stayed with him since the Supreme Court’s 2019 verdict on the Ayodhya dispute.
“If Allah wills, a mosque in memory of Babri Masjid will surely be built here in Hyderabad,” he told the crowd.

Malik expressed confidence that the project would move forward despite possible legal and political hurdles. He said he aims to lay the foundation by December 2025 and expects visible progress within a year after that.

The announcement came shortly after suspended Trinamool Congress leader Humayun Kabir laid the foundation stone for a similar Babri Masjid replica in Rejinagar, Murshidabad district of West Bengal. Kabir, guarded by heavy security, described the initiative as a symbolic attempt to soothe the deep pain felt by many Muslims since the mosque’s demolition in 1992. Thousands reportedly attended the ceremony, reflecting growing interest in commemorative projects.

Malik said the proposed Hyderabad mosque would serve both as a place of worship and a reminder of the events of 1992, which led to widespread communal violence that claimed over 2,000 lives, most of them Muslims.

Community leaders note that several such memorial or replica projects are now being planned in different parts of the country to preserve the memory of the demolished structure.
