Residents of Murshidabad have raised concerns after hundreds of voters were reportedly removed from the electoral roll at a single polling booth in the district.

The issue has emerged from Debipur village in the Suti II block, where the booth is located in a Muslim majority area. According to locals, the deletions have largely affected Muslim residents, leaving many families confused about their voting status.

Reports suggest that the booth earlier had around 1,000 registered voters. During the Special Intensive Revision process, more than 500 names were taken up for verification. A significant portion of these were later removed from the final list, reducing the number of registered voters considerably.

Residents claim they were not given clear reasons for the deletions, even after submitting required documents. In several cases, multiple members of the same household found their names missing from the updated voter list.

One local resident said that even people with stable jobs and valid records were affected. He cited the example of his brother, a personnel with the Border Security Force, whose name was reportedly removed despite having proper documentation.

Families said they approached district officials with their papers but did not receive a satisfactory explanation. Those impacted include individuals from different professions such as doctors, teachers, and other working citizens.

Many residents have questioned the fairness of the exercise, pointing out that the booth is situated in a Muslim majority locality and alleging that the removals do not appear to be random.

Officials, however, stated that the changes were part of a routine verification exercise conducted by the Election Commission of India. Under this process, voter details are reviewed and entries may be deleted if eligibility cannot be confirmed or documents are found insufficient.

While hearings were held as part of the procedure, affected families say their concerns remain unresolved, and they are still awaiting clear answers from authorities.
