Karwar, Uttara Kannada: The District Administration of Uttara Kannada has declared a holiday for all educational institutions on Thursday, August 28, 2025, in response to a ‘Red Alert’ issued by the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall across the region.

The official order was issued on Wednesday evening by the District Deputy Commissioner and District Magistrate. The directive applies to all government and private Anganwadis, primary schools, high schools, pre-university colleges throughout the entire district, including major taluks like Bhatkal, Karwar, Sirsi, and Honnavar.

According to the circular, the decision was made as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety and well-being of students. The IMD has predicted intense rainfall for August 27th and 28th, prompting the administration to take preventive action under the Disaster Management Act, 2005.

The order further instructs Block Education Officers and the Deputy Directors of Public Instruction to ensure that any students who had already arrived at their institutions are sent back to their homes safely. College principals have also been directed to take all necessary precautions for their students.

This move comes as coastal and Malnad regions of Karnataka brace for a spell of torrential rain, with authorities urging citizens to stay cautious and avoid venturing into hazardous areas.
