Hi-Tech Fish Market Opens in Bhatkal – Sellers Absent, Buyers Disappointed
  • Published OnSeptember 1, 2025

The Bhatkal municipality officially opened the long-awaited hi-tech fish market on Hospital Road after six years of construction delays, welcoming customers to a modern facility equipped with over 60 fish stalls, sanitation amenities, and extra space for trade and offices. The market was built with funds from the Coastal Development Board, totaling ₹1.38 crore, and was first inaugurated by district officials in 2018.

Despite the fanfare, fish vendors completely boycotted the opening, leaving the market empty and forcing disappointed buyers to return home without making purchases. This boycott reflects long-standing opposition among sellers to relocate from the old market, citing concerns about losing their customer base and demanding additional facilities at their current location.

Local residents expressed strong dissatisfaction with the municipality, criticizing officials for inaugurating the new market without resolving disputes with sellers and for failing to ensure fish trading actually began. The municipality has appealed for cooperation from traders but faces ongoing resistance, as fish continues to be sold at makeshift locations around town while the new market remains largely unused.

With fish vendors and customers divided, and authorities unable to enforce relocation, the fate of the hi-tech market is increasingly uncertain. The municipality has promised ongoing efforts to resolve the standoff and make the facility functional for the public, but frustrations remain high within the community.
