Government Dismisses Lockdown Rumours as Baseless

Growing rumours about a possible lockdown in India have been firmly shut down by the central government, with senior ministers calling the claims completely false and urging citizens to stay calm.

The speculation picked up after Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed Parliament earlier this week, warning that the ongoing conflict in West Asia could have long-term global consequences and that the world may face challenges similar to those seen during the COVID-19 pandemic. Some circles interpreted his remarks as a hint toward a possible lockdown, triggering widespread panic across several cities.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman was quick to respond, stating that such rumours, particularly when spread by political figures, are deeply concerning. She made it clear that a lockdown on the scale seen during COVID is not being considered and that there is no proposal of any kind under review. “There is no need for the public to panic,” she said.

Union Minister Kiren Rijiju echoed the same message, questioning who is behind the spread of these rumours. He reminded citizens that the Prime Minister himself has already appealed for calm. Rijiju also directed state governments to take strong action against hoarding and to prevent any situation that could deepen public fear or create unnecessary shortages.

Minister Hardeep Singh Puri also reinforced the government’s position, reiterating that a lockdown is neither planned nor being implemented.

The government’s coordinated response signals a clear effort to contain the panic before it causes disruption to daily life or supply chains.
