A wave of protests has swept across the globe following Israel’s interception of the “Global Sumud Flotilla,” a mission carrying humanitarian aid to Gaza.

Demonstrators from Europe to South America and Australia took to the streets, condemning Israel’s action and calling for stricter sanctions. The flotilla, which set sail from Barcelona last month, aimed to challenge the Israeli blockade on Gaza, where the UN has warned of famine conditions.

An Israeli official confirmed that its navy stopped 41 ships with over 400 people on board. The passengers included politicians, activists, and climate campaigner Greta Thunberg. Many now face deportation by Israeli authorities.

In Barcelona, approximately 15,000 people marched in solidarity. The protest saw minor clashes as riot police pushed back some demonstrators. Former Barcelona mayor Ada Colau was on one of the halted boats.

Hundreds gathered outside the Irish parliament in Dublin, drawing parallels between the Palestinian cause and Ireland’s own history. In France, protests in Paris and Marseille led to around 100 arrests after activists tried to block the offices of a company they accuse of selling weapons parts to Israel.

Italy saw some of the largest demonstrations, with unions calling for a general strike. Thousands marched in Rome, Milan, and other cities, criticizing the government’s support for Israel.

Further protests were reported in cities including Berlin, The Hague, Tunis, Brasilia, Buenos Aires, and Brussels. In Brussels, a crowd of 3,000 gathered outside the European Parliament, urging the EU to cut financial ties with Israel.

In Istanbul, protesters marched to the Israeli embassy, and in Athens, demonstrators set off flares, condemning what they called a “barbaric escalation.” Rallies also took place in Geneva and Kuala Lumpur, where protesters voiced their anger in front of the U.S. embassy.
