DEIR EL-BALAH, GAZA – Palestinian forensic teams are facing overwhelming challenges in identifying bodies returned by Israel, as severe equipment shortages hamper efforts to provide closure to grieving families.

According to Gaza’s Health Ministry, medical teams are “scrambling” to identify remains due to a critical lack of medical equipment and DNA testing facilities. The situation has made it extremely difficult to properly notify families about their loved ones.

Over the past three days, the International Committee of the Red Cross has facilitated the transfer of bodies between Israeli and Palestinian authorities. However, the identification process has been painstakingly slow amid Gaza’s crippled healthcare infrastructure.

“Only seven bodies have been identified among those recently released to Gaza by Israel,” the Health Ministry reported, highlighting the scale of the challenge facing forensic teams.

The bodies are believed to be those of Palestinians who died in Israeli prisons or detention facilities. Families across Gaza remain in anguished uncertainty, waiting for news about missing relatives.

The identification crisis comes as Palestinians anticipate another round of body releases from Israeli authorities, raising concerns that already overwhelmed forensic teams will face additional pressure without adequate resources or international support.
