A sudden flash flood swept through a wild camping site in North China’s Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region late Saturday night, resulting in a tragic loss of life and leaving several missing.

According to local authorities, the calamity struck around 10p.m. in the upstream area of a river in Urad Rear Banner near Bayannur city, a region well-known for its picturesque grasslands and camping spots. At the time, a group of 13 people were camping in the area when heavy rain caused the river to overflow, quickly inundating the camp.

Rescuers responded immediately, and by Sunday morning, one person had been rescued alive. Unfortunately, authorities confirmed that eight people lost their lives, while four others are still missing. Search and rescue operations continue with hundreds of first responders urgently searching the area to locate the missing campers.

Recent weeks have seen persistent extreme weather across northern China, with heavy rainfall triggering flash floods and landslides in several regions. The Ministry of Emergency Management has urged travelers and outdoor enthusiasts to avoid undeveloped or wilderness areas during flood season and to stay alert for weather warnings.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the risks associated with unpredictable natural disasters and the importance of heeding safety guidelines, especially during the rainy season.
