Fish Finder Devices Transform Coastal Fishing in Karnataka

Mangaluru: Coastal fishing in Karnataka is witnessing a major shift as fishermen increasingly rely on modern technology to improve their catch and ensure safer voyages. Among the latest innovations, fish finder devices have emerged as a powerful tool, allowing fishermen to accurately locate fish in the deep sea.
The fish finders work by using sound waves through a small device called a transducer. When signals bounce back from the seabed or the fish, the system calculates the depth and density of fish in that area. On the device screen, a dark signal indicates a large concentration of fish, guiding fishermen to cast their nets, while a lighter signal shows scattered fish stocks.
In addition to these fishing aids, authorities have also made it compulsory for deep-sea fishing boats to use ISRO-based satellite transponders. These trackers not only monitor the position of the boat in real time but also issue alerts during emergencies, significantly improving safety for fishermen venturing far into the sea.
While these technological tools provide precise data, the experience of traditional fishermen continues to guide the final decision. Locals say that sardines (locally known as boothai) can often be spotted when tiny air bubbles rise to the surface, while mackerel (bangude) reveal themselves by creating shimmering ripples across the sea, especially on sunny days.
With the blend of technology and traditional knowledge, fishing along Karnataka’s coast is becoming more productive, efficient, and safer than ever before.
