BRUSSELS – The European Commission has formally registered a citizen-led initiative calling for the full suspension of the EU-Israel Association Agreement, the cornerstone of the bloc’s trade and political relations with Israel.

The initiative, represented by former Member of the European Parliament Malin Björk, argues that Israel’s actions in Gaza constitute serious breaches of international law. The organizers cite the “unprecedented” killing of civilians, large-scale displacement, the destruction of medical infrastructure, and the blocking of humanitarian aid as grounds for the suspension.

In a statement, the European Commission clarified that registering the initiative merely acknowledges it as legally admissible and “does not imply that the Commission in any way confirms the factual correctness of the content.”

The organizers now have 12 months to gather at least one million signatures from citizens across a minimum of seven EU member states. If successful, the European Commission is required to formally examine the proposal and outline its intended actions, though it is not obligated to suspend the agreement.

The petition states that EU citizens “cannot tolerate” an agreement that they believe legitimizes and finances a state accused of war crimes. The EU-Israel Association Agreement facilitates extensive trade and economic cooperation between the two parties.
