Emirates to Ban Use of Power Banks Onboard Starting October 1, 2025
Dubai-based airline Emirates has announced new rules about power bank use on its flights, effective from October 1, 2025. Passengers will still be allowed to bring one power bank with them, but they will not be permitted to use or charge it while on the plane.
A power bank is a portable battery used to recharge gadgets like smartphones, tablets, or laptops. According to the new safety rules, only one power bank with a capacity of less than 100 Watt Hours (Wh) is allowed per passenger, and its capacity must be clearly labeled on the device.
New Emirates rules include:
- No charging of devices using power banks during the flight.
- Passengers cannot charge power banks using the aircraft’s power outlets.
- Power banks must be stored either under the passenger seat or in the seat pocket; storing them in overhead bins is no longer allowed.
- Carrying power banks in checked baggage remains strictly prohibited.
This decision follows an increase in incidents involving lithium battery-powered power banks on aircraft. These batteries can overheat and cause fires or explosions if damaged or improperly charged—a risk known as thermal runaway. Modern devices often have built-in safety features, but some power banks may lack these protections, raising serious safety concerns.
