The Indian National Congress on Saturday (March 28) accused Israel of pushing forward its long-standing vision of a “Greater Israel” under the cover of the ongoing conflict in West Asia, warning that such moves could eliminate any remaining possibility of a viable Palestinian state.

The party also strongly criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for not speaking out against Israel’s actions, particularly in the occupied West Bank.

Congress General Secretary (Communications) Jairam Ramesh said it has been 28 days since the aerial conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran began, with Iran launching retaliatory strikes. He noted that while global attention has largely been focused on tensions in the Strait of Hormuz and concerns over energy infrastructure, Israel has intensified its military and strategic operations across multiple regions.

According to Ramesh, in the past four weeks Israel has continued its military campaign in Gaza, initiated steps to create a buffer zone in southern Lebanon, and taken measures aimed at strengthening its hold over the West Bank.

He alleged that the ongoing conflict has provided Israel with an opportunity to advance its broader territorial ambitions. “The current situation is being used as a cover to push ahead with a Greater Israel agenda, effectively ending hopes for a Palestinian state,” Ramesh said in a statement shared on social media.

Ramesh also highlighted the timing of recent developments, pointing out that the US-Israel strikes on Iran began shortly after Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Israel. He added that just days before the visit, the Israeli government had approved land registration in a significant portion of the occupied West Bank—its first such move in decades—which he claimed could lead to large-scale displacement of Palestinians.

The Congress leader further accused the Prime Minister of failing to take a stand on humanitarian concerns, alleging that he has remained silent despite the ongoing crisis. He also criticised the government’s stance on the Israel-Palestine issue, calling its stated support for Palestine inconsistent with its actions.

The Congress has repeatedly questioned the timing of the Prime Minister’s recent Israel visit, arguing that it came amid continued violence in Gaza. The party has also condemned reports of displacement and humanitarian distress in the West Bank, which have drawn international concern.

The latest remarks reflect growing political differences in India over the government’s approach to the Israel-Palestine issue and the wider West Asia conflict.
