Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin on Saturday congratulated JD(U) leader Nitish Kumar after the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) secured a clear victory in the Bihar Assembly elections. However, he used the occasion to sharply criticise the Election Commission of India (ECI), saying the Bihar result does not absolve the Commission of its “misdeeds” and “reckless actions.”

In a post shared on X, Stalin said the credibility of the ECI has reached “its lowest point,” adding that the people of India deserve a more impartial and trustworthy Commission. “The conduct of elections should inspire confidence even among those who do not win,” he wrote.

Praise for INDIA Bloc Campaign

Despite the INDIA bloc’s defeat in Bihar, Stalin praised RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav and other alliance partners for their dedicated campaign efforts. He said election outcomes are shaped by welfare programmes, social coalitions, clear messaging, and strong organisational work. The INDIA bloc, he added, has leaders capable of understanding the verdict and planning for future challenges.

DMK’s Opposition to SIR in Tamil Nadu

Stalin’s remarks come as Tamil Nadu prepares for its own Assembly elections next year. The ruling DMK and its allies have been opposing the Centre’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, calling it unnecessary and politically motivated. The party has already approached the Supreme Court against the exercise.

Tamil Nadu Minister Govi Chezhian linked the issue to the ongoing debate surrounding the Bihar results, claiming that the alleged “vote theft conspiracy” highlighted by opposition leaders there would not succeed in Tamil Nadu. He said the state’s voters and leadership were “vigilant” against such attempts.

Opposition Takes Opposing Stand

Meanwhile, Leader of Opposition Edappadi K. Palaniswami defended the SIR process, dismissing allegations of conspiracy. The AIADMK leader argued that the INDIA bloc labels elections “rigged” only when it loses, while calling the results legitimate when it wins. Palaniswami maintained that SIR was essential to remove fake voters from the rolls.
