Kalaburagi, Karnataka: Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Wednesday reaffirmed that Christians and Muslims are equal citizens of India, pushing back against allegations by the BJP that his government is encouraging religious conversions through the ongoing caste census.

His remarks came in response to complaints filed with Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot, opposing the inclusion of Christian communities under Hindu caste categories in the caste survey.

Speaking to the media in Kalaburagi, CM Siddaramaiah clarified the state’s approach: “Christians and Muslims are also citizens of this country. The survey aims to gather accurate data on the social, economic, and educational status of every citizen to help design welfare schemes.”

He noted that the government has deployed 1.75 lakh teachers to carry out the caste census from September 22 to October 7, which is 40,000 more than in the previous survey.

Reacting to the BJP’s criticism of an ‘Atheist’ column in the survey, the Chief Minister accused the party of politicizing a necessary administrative exercise. “It has been 78 years since Independence. If we don’t collect reliable data, how can we make informed policy decisions?” he asked.

The Chief Minister also used the opportunity to criticize the Centre over pending demands. He stated that Karnataka has made repeated requests to the Union Government for increased Natural Resource Protection (NRP) compensation. Despite meetings with senior central officials, including Finance Secretary and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, there has been no response.

Addressing concerns about the misuse of rice meant for the Public Distribution System (PDS) being exported illegally, Siddaramaiah said a CID investigation is underway and progressing swiftly.

He also announced the creation of a separate ministry for Kalyana Karnataka to boost the development of the region. Officials will be appointed shortly to kick-start this new initiative.

On the agricultural front, the Chief Minister said a joint survey by the Revenue and Agriculture Departments is underway to assess crop loss caused by erratic weather. “Compensation will be distributed once the report is ready. This year, the state received 4% more rainfall than average, but districts like Bidar, Kalaburagi, and Yadgir have seen significant crop damage,” he said.

He added that crop insurance claims worth ₹656 crore have been paid out in the 2024–25 financial year. For farmers who did not take insurance, the government will consider compensation after reviewing their situation. The demand for a farm loan waiver is also under active consideration.

Finally, responding to accusations that the state delayed reporting flood damages last year, Siddaramaiah clarified that all reports were submitted on time. “The Centre’s delay in action forced us to move the Supreme Court, following which compensation was granted,” he concluded.
