Centuries-Old School Reopens in Gaza, Bringing Hope to Children
Amid widespread destruction, the historic Al-Kamalia School offers education and a sense of normalcy to students who have missed years of learning.

In the heart of Gaza City, a centuries-old school has reopened its doors, becoming a rare beacon of hope and learning for children whose education has been disrupted by years of conflict.
The Al-Kamalia School, originally founded in 1237, had been closed since 1949. Today, volunteer teachers have transformed its historic stone building into a functioning learning space the only one operating in the area.
“As soon as we heard that this school had reopened, we were very excited and happy. Hope was restored,” said Saja Khalifa, one of the students.
With little more than chalk and notebooks, the school has become a lifeline. Yet demand far exceeds capacity. Naheel al-Aklouk, a mother turned away due to full classrooms, expressed her frustration: “My son is going to grade six, but he is not at the sixth-grade level now. We want our children to be educated. Enough destruction.”
For many children in Gaza, this school is their first chance to learn in over two years.
