Bihar Government Gives Final Deadline to Dr Nusrat Parveen to Join Duty Amid Hijab Controversy
Health Department extends joining date till January 7 as the case continues to draw political attention.

Patna: The Nitish Kumar-led Bihar government has once again given Dr Nusrat Parveen, who came into the spotlight due to a hijab-related controversy, a final opportunity to join her government service. The state Health Department on Friday, January 2, extended her joining deadline and set January 7 as the new last date.
Dr Nusrat was earlier asked to report for duty by December 20. However, following the controversy surrounding her hijab, she did not join within the stipulated time. The government then granted her an extension till December 31, but she failed to join even by that date. The Health Department has now decided to give her one more chance by extending the deadline again.
The controversy dates back to December 15, when Chief Minister Nitish Kumar distributed appointment letters to selected doctors. A video from the event went viral on social media, showing the Chief Minister lifting Dr Nusrat’s hijab during the ceremony. The incident triggered widespread debate and criticism across the country.
According to Dr Mahfoozur Rahman, Principal of Patna Medical College and Hospital, Dr Nusrat’s family had assured authorities that she would join duty soon. However, her joining has not yet been confirmed. Dr Nusrat is also a first-year postgraduate student at the same medical college.
Notably, the issue has gone beyond an administrative matter and has taken on political significance. Bihar Governor Arif Mohammad Khan has advised Dr Nusrat to join her government post. Meanwhile, Jharkhand Health Minister Dr Irfan Ansari has offered her a job with a monthly salary of ₹3 lakh, further adding to the political dimension of the case.
