Bengaluru Professor Suspended Over Alleged Communal Remarks in Classroom
PES University takes action after a video shows a professor repeatedly calling a Muslim student a “terrorist.”

A professor at PES University in Bengaluru has been suspended following serious allegations of making communal and abusive remarks toward a Muslim student during a classroom session.
The incident, which reportedly took place earlier this week at the university’s Electronic City campus, came to light after a video began circulating on social media. In the footage, Professor Dr. Muralidhar Deshpande is seen addressing a student named Affan in an aggressive manner in front of nearly 60 students.
According to the video, the professor allegedly referred to the student as a “terrorist” multiple times reportedly at least 13 times—while also making other offensive comments. He is also heard questioning the student’s sense of shame and making remarks linking global conflicts, including the Iran situation, to “people like you.” Additional statements in the video include references to former U.S. President Donald Trump and comments about the student’s fate.
The incident has sparked concern among students and observers, with some alleging that CCTV footage of the classroom session was later deleted. There are also claims that students who spoke in support of the affected student faced disciplinary action, though these claims have not been officially confirmed.
Following a formal complaint, the university administration suspended the professor pending a detailed inquiry. In a letter issued by the Vice Chancellor, the institution stated that the suspension would remain in effect while the matter is investigated. The letter did not specify the exact nature of the allegations.
While the professor has reportedly submitted a written apology to the university, there has been no direct apology made to the student involved.
Police have registered a non-cognizable report in connection with the incident. However, no formal case has been filed so far.
Student organisations have reacted strongly. The National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) has filed a police complaint demanding strict action and a public apology. Meanwhile, the Students Islamic Organisation of India (SIO) has called for the registration of a formal FIR, describing the incident as a serious violation of communal harmony.
The video has triggered widespread outrage online, with many users condemning the remarks and raising concerns about rising intolerance in educational spaces.
