Assam: A mosque imam in Assam is being praised for his presence of mind after he used the mosque loudspeaker at dawn to alert villagers about a car that had plunged into a pond, leading to the rescue of seven passengers trapped inside.

The incident took place early Tuesday in Sribhumi district when a car travelling along the National Highway skidded off the road and crashed into a waterbody. Most of the occupants were asleep when the vehicle began sinking, leaving them trapped with the windows shut.

Hearing the loud crash, Maulana Abdul Basit—Imam of the Jama Masjid and a teacher at Mirabari Madrasa—quickly grabbed the mosque microphone and urged local residents to rush to the spot. His announcement woke up many villagers, prompting them to immediately gather near the pond.

A resident told NDTV that the appeal sparked a rapid community response. Villagers joined together to pull the seven trapped passengers from the partially submerged car.

Basit, speaking to The Observer Post, said he noticed the car’s headlights glowing underwater and knew rescue efforts had to begin without delay. He added that the decision to act was driven solely by compassion: “We did not think about religion. Saving lives was all that mattered.”
