6.5 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Papua, Indonesia

A strong 6.5 magnitude earthquake shook Indonesia’s eastern province of Papua on Thursday afternoon. The US Geological Survey (USGS) confirmed the event, noting no tsunami warning has been issued and no damage has been reported yet.
The quake struck at around 2:48 p.m. local time (5:48 a.m. GMT). Its epicenter was located about 200 kilometers (125 miles) from the city of Jayapura, at a depth of 35 kilometers underground.
Officials are monitoring the situation closely, but early signs show no major impacts.
