6.0-Magnitude Earthquake Hits Eastern Russia’s Kuril Islands

Moscow, August 27 – A powerful earthquake measuring 6.0 on the Richter scale struck the Kuril Islands in eastern Russia on Wednesday, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).
The tremor occurred about 98 kilometers east of Severo-Kurilsk, a town in the region, with the epicenter located at a depth of nearly 53 kilometers beneath the ground.
The Kuril Islands, situated along the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” are highly prone to earthquakes and volcanic activity. The area contains nearly 100 volcanoes, including 39 that remain active today. In addition, scientists have identified natural hot springs, mineral lakes, and more than 60 underwater volcanoes below the surface of the sea.
Seismic activity is common in this region due to its geographical position, making it one of the most seismically active zones in the world.
