16 Countries Demand Protection for Gaza-Bound Aid Flotilla, Stress Respect for International Law

Sixteen nations have jointly called for the protection of the Global Sumud Flotilla, a convoy of boats carrying activists and vital humanitarian aid to Gaza, which remains under an Israeli blockade. The statement, issued by South Africa’s Foreign Ministry, affirms that the flotilla’s mission to deliver aid and raise awareness of Gaza’s humanitarian crisis aligns with their commitment to peace and international humanitarian law.
The countries urged all parties to refrain from any unlawful or violent acts against the flotilla’s vessels, whether in international waters or elsewhere, emphasizing the need for respect for both international law and humanitarian norms.
The statement included a stern warning that any attack on the flotilla or illegal detention of participants would lead to accountability measures. This collective appeal underscores global concern over potential escalation and the safety of peace activists and aid workers.
Countries signing the statement are Türkiye, Qatar, Bangladesh, Brazil, Colombia, Indonesia, Ireland, Libya, Malaysia, the Maldives, Mexico, Pakistan, Oman, Slovenia, South Africa, and Spain.
The joint declaration highlights the importance of humanitarian access to Gaza and the protection of civilians amidst ongoing conflict and blockade effects.
