BANGALORE – In a daring daylight heist, thieves disguised as Reserve Bank of India (RBI) officers stole ₹7.1 crore from an armored cash van on Wednesday afternoon in Bangalore.

The incident took place between 12:30 PM and 1:00 PM when a CMS Info Systems cash van was traveling from HDFC Bank’s JP Nagar branch to HBR Layout with the money. A group of five to six armed men intercepted the vehicle and carried out the robbery in a well-planned operation.

The thieves used a Maruti Zen hatchback to block the cash van’s path. Two other vehicles – an MUV and a Toyota Innova – were also part of the operation.

The gang members, dressed as RBI officials, approached the van’s driver and crew. They claimed there was an issue and told the staff they needed to take them to a police station for questioning.

Believing them to be genuine officials, the crew members were kidnapped and taken away. Meanwhile, the robbers quickly transferred the cash boxes from the armored van into their vehicles and fled the scene.

Bangalore Police have launched a major investigation into the robbery. Officers are reviewing more than 50 CCTV recordings from the area to trace the suspects and their escape route.

The Police Commissioner stated that authorities are looking into all angles, including the possibility of inside help. Questions have also been raised about the delay in reporting the incident.

Several special investigation teams have been formed to track down and arrest the culprits as quickly as possible.

Both the police and the Home Minister have described the incident as a serious crime. They have appealed to citizens to immediately report any suspicious activity or information related to the case.

The authorities are working around the clock to recover the stolen money and bring the criminals to justice.
